The push for a greener future in the UK’s road transport is gaining momentum, with a new report from the Zemo Partnership highlighting the crucial role of low-carbon, renewable fuels. According to their latest study, these fuels offer a viable, immediate solution to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as the sector moves towards zero-emission vehicles.

The “Vehicle life cycle GHG emissions study” reveals that renewable fuels not only match but can also exceed the emission reduction potential compared to traditional fossil fuels when analyzed across their entire life cycle. This insight is pivotal as the UK aims to cut GHG emissions from surface transport by nearly 100 million tonnes by 2035, with a further reduction to around 136 million tonnes by 2050.

Gloria Esposito, Zemo’s head of sustainability and co-author of the report, emphasizes the effectiveness of renewable fuels in the current landscape. “Our study demonstrates the substantial impact renewable fuels can have on reducing GHG emissions, particularly for the UK’s HGV fleet, where immediate gains are ready to be harnessed,” she stated.
